role in prevention
Flouride's role in preventionFluoride is an important mineral that occurs in nature that has been the number one reason for the reduction of dental decay. It is ingested by children through the water supplies, or by supplementation by tablets or drops. This affects the developing teeth. Teeth that have erupted into the mouth can only be strengthened by fluoride that is applied topically. This is done through toothpastes, topical treatments in the dental office, and gels and rinses. Very young children, who cannot rinse and will swallow toothpaste, should be given either minimal toothpaste or one without fluoride. All children need to have adequate fluoride in their diet, and to have teeth that have erupted treated topically to minimize decay. For additional information see the Fluoride section. |
