Orthodontic Separators
Separators are placed between your child's teeth before orthodontic bands are fitted for his/her orthodontic appliances. These donut shaped elastics are placed between various teeth to separate them slightly so that the orthodontic bands can be fitted on them comfortably. This is usually done from three to seven days before the bands are fitted. Orthodontic separators can be slightly uncomfortable. Tylenol or another analgesic may be taken to help keep your child comfortable.
A separator can come out by itself, if it has made enough space between your child's teeth.
They can also come out if your child plays with them with their tongue or fingers. Sticky foods and chewing gum may also cause a separator to come out. If your child does lose a separator, find out if there is adequate space for the orthodontic bands by flossing between the two teeth. If the contact is tight and the floss gets stuck, the separator hasn't made adequate space. You will need to get have them replaced before their band fitting appointment.
