Whitening
Tooth WhiteningThe whitening of teeth in dentistry is a well-established and utilized practice with a very long history. The older techniques have always involved the use of high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide combined with heat and light. When properly done in the dental office this has produced excellent results. Recent research has demonstrated comparably good results by professionally whitening teeth at home using a relatively mild concentration of peroxide oral gel antiseptic in a glycerin base. The gel must be maintained in intimate contact with the teeth by trays the dentist custom fits to a patient's mouth. These trays are worn from two to four hours per day. The preferable time is overnight. Although very infrequent, there have been reported some minor side effects such as gum or teeth sensitivity, nausea, and sore throat. They are minimized by proper use of the material, the proper fit of the custom trays, and are not common with the materials we use. These potential side effects subside when treatment is discontinued. The amount of whitening varies with the individual. Changes occur from within one day to over 2-6 weeks of use. Staining with coffee, tea and tobacco can occur just as before treatment. Yellow teeth and teeth with brownish colors have the best response to treatment. Teeth can be effectively lightened by 2-6 shades over a short treatment period. Many of our office staff and patients have used these materials and have had extremely positive results. © The Center for Pediatric Dental Care |
